Tourism is a very interesting phenomenon. Of course, travel has been around for many, many years, but I think that the idea of the ‘tourist’ is a fairly recent concept. Tourism is something that also seems to attract quite a large amount of stereotyping. For example, I have a very good friend who lives in Munich, Germany, who assures me that she can very easily spot American tourists by the way they dress and by the way they behave, even before she has heard them speaking. She claims that they always wear flip-flops, shorts and sweaters, and also that they always travel in groups. This of course seems like quite a lazy stereotype, but the interesting (and often annoying) thing is that she is almost always correct.
